The Era
St. Christopher's High School, Poole, opened its doors in January 1947,
a time when few families had a car and even less a telephone or
television. By the time the School closed 22 years later, the black Ford
Prefect had given way to the two-tone Cortina GT, an operator no longer connected your call and Cliff Richard was not quite so cool, even if he was still appearing on Top
Of The Pops, in colour, on your new Japanese TV!
The School saw post-war austerity turn into the swinging 60s and provided education during one of the most exciting and
optimistic periods in recent history. If you were one of the hundreds of
children who shared the St Christopher's experience during their formative
years, I hope you will enjoy this web site. Stay in touch!
The School
St. Christopher's High School, Poole, provided nursery (Kindergarten)
and
junior education for both boys and girls.
For boys this lasted up to the age of 11 years when the 11plus examination
determined their future.
In the School's hey-day, girls were able to remain up to the age of
16.
The School closed in 1969, the staff either retired or moved to other schools and the building was demolished to make way for a new block of flats. The front wall of glazed brick, remains!
The proprietor and Head Mistress throughout the 22 years of its existence, was Miss P.M. Lodge.
The web site
This web site aims to provided a source of information about the School, an archive for photographs and other material and to support a social network for ex-pupils. It is envisaged that it will be used in conjunction with the Friends Reunited commercial web site, which can provide a secure means of contacting pupils who have signed up. We hope you will too!
The St. Christopher's web site is presently maintained and edited by Ian Smith, a pupil from 1954 -
1962. He would be happy to include more photographs and details of the school and its pupils
and would, in any case, be very pleased to hear from you, if only to correct any
mistakes!
