'PURE NOSTALGIA' was an ‘in-house’ magazine produced in the Department of Photography at Salisbury College of Art between 1980 and 1988.

There were nine editions, eight edited by Ian Smith and the ninth by David Pitt.

They were primarily written for our alumni, each edition containing contemporary articles about the department, staff profiles and letters from past students.

Early editions were typed on an IBM golf-ball electric typewriter by Gillian March with later editions typeset by Ian Anderson using early desktop publishing software.

Editions 1 - 8 were printed by Alex Grant using the department's Gestetner offset litho printer.

They were great fun to produce but took a good deal of time in an increasingly busy department and by the 8th, staff were beginning to struggle to produce them.

The ninth edition took a new direction, seeking commercial sponsorship, higher production values and an appeal to a wider audience.

It was printed by Wilton Graphics and even included a competition to find a new name for the magazine.

Sadly, for reasons lost in the mists of time, it was to be the last edition.

Thirty years on, the magazines paint an interesting picture of life in a successful provincial art college and the careers available for graduates in the 1980s.

The material reflects values considered acceptable at the time of original publication.

  Enjoy!!
